Characterization and Identification of Ultrawideband Radio Propagation Channels
نویسندگان
چکیده
This dissertation is concerned with the propagation of ultrawideband (UWB) electromagnetic impulses in complex multipath environments. In the first part the distortion of a UWB signal as it propagates through frequency selective materials is examined. The potential degree of distortion is investigated through experimental measurements, then the effect of that distortion on UWB communication and position location applications is examined. The second part considers a common specular channel model for ultrawideband indoor multipath propagation that also has much in common with indoor propagation models for non-ultrawideband signals. A number of properties of the model that can aid in design and analysis of communication systems in multipath channels but that are not explicit model parameters, such as power delay profile and delay spread, are derived as functions of the parameters of the model. The final part of the dissertation investigates performing channel identification: having two radios use the multipath channel as a source of common randomness in order to agree on a secret key that can by used for data encryption. The information theoretic aspects of secret sharing are considered as they apply to UWB channel identification, and bounds derived on the maximum identifier length. The practical aspects of channel identification are discussed, including a design methodology for the optimal quantizer, and techniques of varying complexity for aiding identifier calculation by sending feedback information over a public channel

متن کاملExtracting Information from the Spatio-temporal Ultrawideband Channel
An overview of the propagation characteristics of ultrawideband (UWB) indoor radio channels is presented with an emphasis on the spatio-temporal channel properties. Extensive measurement results are provided and practical considerations are highlighted. The insight into robust UWB communications and sensor networks, provided by channel modeling, is discussed.
متن کاملUltrawideband Antenna Arrays and Directional Propagation Channels
The large spectral occupancy of ultrawideband (UWB) wireless signals significantly complicates the design of multi-antenna arrays and the characterization of propagation channels determining the performance of such arrays. This survey paper develops generic techniques for double-directional UWB channel characterization, and surveys methods for the extraction of the parameters of multipath compo...

With the rapid growth of indoor wireless communication systems, the need to accurately model radio wave propagation inside the building environments has increased. Many site-specific methods have been proposed for modeling indoor radio channels. Among these methods, the ray tracing algorithm and the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method are the most popular ones. The ray tracing approach ...
متن کاملMultiuser Interference Mitigation in Noncoherent UWB Ranging via Nonlinear Filtering
Ranging with energy detectors enables low-cost implementation. However, any interference can be quite detrimental to range accuracy. We develop a method that performs nonlinear filtering on the received signal energy to mitigate multiuser interference (MUI); and we test it over time-hopping and direct sequence impulse radio ultrawideband signals. Simulations conducted over IEEE 802.15.4a reside...
